Brands are not built in a Day: 5 Branding Lessons From ‘Fair & Lovely’ and ‘Valentine Day’

Though Valentine Day happens to be quite lovey-dovey and mushy for couples but it was interesting and educating for the single like me since morning. Why interesting, because I got to see some interesting incidents, which was educating also for me because these interesting incidents were very niche earlier and went on to become phenomenon in the country. First incident was with my kid cousin brother. He is twelve year old. I was about to leave for a meeting when I saw this rubbing ‘Fair & Lovely’ on his face. I jokingly taunted him and he felt embarrassed. Fairness and ‘Fair & Lovely’ is still widely feminine thing in India, which is obsessed with fair skinned girls. It’s the different thing that brand owner Hindustan Uniliver Limited has launched fairness cream for men also, under the same brand name. As I have written, fairness is still considered feminine thing in India, but men are also using lot of cosmetics and grooming products. According to Nielsen reports (2010...

Story of 'Cup Half Empty'

Image
Many a time I have heard the story of ‘ Cup Half Empty ’, which inspires people to be always ready to learn. Though I keep myself busy learning new things from anybody and everybody, I never took this story so literally until few days back when I went for trip to Prayag, Varanasi and Sarnath. This four day trip was not only refreshing for me but educating as well. I went on this trip with not much expectation and no prejudice and what turned out for me was an awesome experience. It taught me the meaning of faith, it taught me to not to be complacent and it taught me to let old and painful emotions to go and empty the space in your mind and heart to accept happiness and contentment.  What I learnt: 1)       What is faith : It is stepping the stairs in the darkness without fearing any misstep, it is coming back to the bank of river Ganga in millions without thinking about food and shelter but a dip in the river, working for better future w...

Six Lesson of Business, Business Model and Revenue Model I Learned As Digital Commerce Entrepreneur and Consultant

Image
As an e-commerce entrepreneur, I believed and believe more in having a robust revenue model first before going to more philosophical business model. I believe that any business must start earning money first to spend on other aspects like value delivery mechanism, human resource etc. While saying so, I am no way reducing the importance of business model; after all, revenue model is just a subset and business model is universe. The "Harvard Business Review on Business Model Innovation" charts four basic tenets of a business model: how the company creates and delivers value to its customers, the ways in which the company will earn a profit, which key components will be utilized and which key processes the company will incorporate. Key components include staff and human resources, machinery and technology as well as branding efforts. Business operations such as manufacturing and training make up the business's key processes. Each business model differs dependin...
